Artisanal smallscale mining (ASM) has devastating impacts on the environment, such as deforestation, overstripping of overburden, burning of bushes and use of harmful chemicals like mercury. These environmental impacts are a result of destructive mining, wasteful mineral extraction and processing practices and techniques used by the artisanal smallscale miners.
This article examines the policy framework in place for smallscale gold mining in Zimbabwe. Through an analysis of stakeholder interviews and industry performance, the paper argues that the main government initiatives to manage gold mining in recent years have proved counterproductive, as economic returns from minerals have hemorrhaged due to increased illegal activity.
Traditionally, artisanal small scale mining in Zimbabwe can be traced back to the 13th century with early Portuguese and Germans participating in gold mining and trade in Penhalonga. However the turn of the 20th century saw an establishment of more than 4 000 mine workings.
