The Town of Fries, named for textile mill owner Colonel Francis Fries, is nestled on the north banks of the New River, just fifteen miles northeast of the Grayson County seat in Independence. Originally, Fries existed as a small trading center with a river crossing.
This town is located in the center of Milford Township and was formerly known as Heistville until 1850. Earliest settlers were Mennonites from the Palatinate in Germany by the name of Clemmers (or Clymers) and Schelles (or Shellys). There were many mills in this town (hence the name) situated along the Licking Creek, a branch of the Unami Creek.
Built by wealthy North Carolina cotton mill owner Col. Francis Henry Fries, the town sprang up around a hydroelectric dam that powered a cotton mill and soon became a fullservice company owned town. By 1901, the New River Train was extended to the mill site and in the following year Fries, ia, was officially incorporated.

Plans include a small stripmall with a few shops along the banks of New River, a restaurant and/or lodging facilities in the parking lot area just above and overlooking where the old mill stood, and possibly a new fire department building in one corner of the parking lot.

SERIOUS MOTORCYCLE CRASH On Friday, June 9 th at around 1:20 AM a serious Motor Vehicle Crash occurred in the Borough of Clayton in the area of Fries Mill Road near the Monroe Twp Border. Two people identified as Vincent Santore (driver) age 43 years old from Williamstown and Dorina Cardy (passenger) age 34 year old of Sicklerville were riding a motorcycle south on Fries Mill Road.
